Female Trouble- Chaotic Film All In One

Female Trouble by John Waters was a film that was not good at all in my opinion. I could barely get through the whole film. I had to force myself to finish the film. This film had so many scenes that made you want to turn it off because of how poorly they put the scenes together. It made you want to look away because of the way the main character was portraying a female. Dawn Davenport’s character developed over time to a crazy woman with no limits on what she does for her audience. She will go to any limits to make her famous, and to show her “fans” what she is capable of. This character will go through times where some of the times it may be considered normal, and other times it’s not.

This film may not make direct comments about female celebrity, fame, and beauty but there are. Some of the key points that stood out to me was how Dawn’s character developed over time to become someone who wasn’t the original person in the first place. Dawn went crazy, and so many events led up to her point of insanity. Her overall appearance changed so much that you wouldn’t recgnize her. She went from a sex worker, to a criminal, to part of a beauty salon in the matter of years. The director could have purposely pushed it to the point of where he had to make Dawn’s character insane for the film, or he was trying to make a point. I think the film was trying to get a rise out of the audience to how far he would go. Female Trouble made a point that fame can get to a person in a matter of seconds. Beauty also plays into it because of how you need to have beauty to become famous. Along with those two, being a celebrity can get into your head and that’s what happened with Dawn Davenport that it drove her to the point where she was sentenced to death. She killed her own daughter and people were feeding her that positive energy that she went nuts.

John Waters did an interesting job filming this film because of how characters were portrayed. This interesting, chaotic film showed how there can be insanity along with some part of sane all in one. Sometimes there needs to be a spice in the mix of the film, and sometimes there doesn’t need to be a spice. Personally there should be a spice in the mix because of how interesting the film can be. In this film it turned out to be insanity all the time, and disturbing in many ways. Definitely one of the worst films I ever watched and I wasn’t a fan at all.

  1. I agree with you that this film was very hard to watch, personally I had to stop and go back to finish viewing it. All in all I believe that Waters created the film that he wanted this to be, in a way that he knew would be jarring and off putting to many people.

  2. I agree. Albeit this was both mentally stimulating and exhausting. I would not watch this film a second time, nor would I recommend it to anyone. I am, however, interested in Waters' other works, for he did say that he improved after this and other one of his movies from that specific era.
